Elevating Industrial Art: Capturing Frank Gehry's The Grand Over Three Years
As a seasoned industrial photographer and licensed drone pilot, my latest adventure was nothing short of extraordinary. For three and a half years, I immersed myself in documenting the construction of Frank Gehry’s "The Grand" in downtown Los Angeles. My journey, like the structure itself, was a testament to endurance, creativity, and the relentless pursuit of capturing the grandeur of construction in motion.
It all began as a vast hole in the ground. Equipped with my trusty backpack, carrying a DJI Mavic 3 Cine, the state-of-the-art Phase One IQ4 150 Digital back, and two Sony A7R IVs, I embarked on this epic photographic expedition. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, our commitment never wavered. This period, while demanding, amplified the importance of documenting this historical construction.
Visiting the site weekly, I became a silent observer of the ever-changing landscape. Each visit brought new angles, new challenges, and a deeper appreciation for the symphony of construction. Navigating the terrain, learning to walk on rebar, and timing my shots between the rhythmic pulses of the concrete pump became second nature.
Meeting Frank Gehry was a highlight. His presence was a reminder of the fusion between artistic vision and architectural prowess. Our brief interactions, though infrequent, were enriching and provided insight into the soul of "The Grand."
As a drone photographer, I soared above the bustling site, capturing aerial perspectives that revealed the project's magnitude and complexity. The DJI Mavic 3 Cine was instrumental in showcasing the grand scale from vantage points that were both breathtaking and revealing.
The Phase One IQ4, with its staggering 151 megapixels, allowed for unprecedented detail, bringing an almost surreal clarity to the evolving structure. Coupled with the versatility of the Sony A7R IVs, my photographic arsenal was complete, enabling me to encapsulate the essence of "The Grand" in all its stages.
As the project neared completion, the transformation from a mere construction site to an architectural marvel was awe-inspiring. The final photographs in the series are a testament to the journey of "The Grand," a structure that stands as much more than a building – it's a symbol of human ingenuity and resilience.
My experience with "The Grand" is a vivid illustration of my passion for industrial and construction photography.
