From Groundwork to Grandeur: Documenting Frank Gehry’s Architectural Masterpiece in LA
As an avid industrial and construction photographer, I've always been driven by a passion for capturing the raw, dynamic process of architectural evolution. When I embarked on the ambitious project of documenting the construction of Frank Gehry's “The Grand” in downtown Los Angeles, I knew it was going to be an extraordinary journey.
My odyssey began with a hole in the ground, a canvas of potential and ambition. Armed with my trusted gear - a DJI Mavic 3 Cine for aerial shots, a Phase One IQ4 150 Digital back for ultra-high-resolution images, and two Sony A7R IVs for versatility - I was prepared to capture every significant moment of this architectural marvel's rise.
For three and a half years, my weekly visits to the job site became a ritual. These visits weren't just about taking photos; they were about becoming part of the construction's lifeblood. I learned to navigate the terrain, walking on rebar, and timing my shots between the concrete pump's pulsations. This wasn’t just photography; it was a dance with the site's rhythm.
The height of the COVID-19 pandemic posed unique challenges, but the project didn't pause, and neither did I. Masked and mindful, I continued my work, ensuring that every stage of construction was immortalized through my lens.
Meeting Frank Gehry was a highlight of this journey. His approachability and insight added depth to my understanding of “The Grand”. It was inspiring to see the man behind the vision and to capture his interactions with the masterpiece-in-progress.
The culmination of this project is not just a building but a coffee table book - a tangible testament to the journey from inception to completion. It's a celebration of construction artistry, architectural brilliance, and photographic passion.
My experience with “The Grand” was more than a photography project. It was a testament to my versatility and dynamism as a photographer. Based in Los Angeles, I am proud to offer my services as an industrial, construction, and drone photographer, ready to collaborate and bring visions to life.
